Video Editing Apps for the iPhone

By Becca Caddy

There are plenty of photo editing applications on the market, from those that add an annoyingly addictive hipster effect to your images to others that turn your face into a cartoon, but what about apps that allow you to edit videos?

When it comes to mobile applications, there's a huge range of photo apps that have proven to be extremely popular over the past few years. It seems images can't be left un-edited, looking like they've been taken in 2011, oh no, popular apps such as Instagram, CameraBag and Hipstamatic can turn seemingly mundane photos into glorious, filtered, tilt-shifted images reminiscent of decades past.

However, with such high quality video recording capabilities, where are all the achingly cool video editing apps that'll turn our run-of-the-mill videos into something faded and vintage? Sure the iPhone 4 can now capture moments in fancy HD, but what about filtering our face away into a dreamy blur?

The truth is there aren't a great deal of video editing apps on the market that deliver when it comes to quality, speed and good effects. So, here are our top three to cover all bases, whether you want to simply cut out that little bit when you sneezed, download one that's easy to use and won't cost a bomb or, surprise surprise, make your photos look like they've been edited in true Instagram-like fashion.

The one that brings Instagram to video: iSupr8

iSupr8 applies an 8mm video filter to your iPhone 4 videos, so it's a good app for Instagram fans who want a similar vintage look. The app allows users to add many different filters to their videos, as well as tweak effects such as grain, vignetting, film burn and framing options.

Interestingly, the app itself has been designed by vintage film enthusiasts in order to increase awareness of the commercially dying format to the masses, or at least that's what the blurb in the app store claims! There are other applications that promise to add a "vintage feel" to your videos, such as Silent Film Director and 8mm Vintage Camera, but iSupr8 is pretty comprehensive and free for the time being.

The one for serious editing: iMovie

iMovie

iMovie is the mobile version of the popular application of the same name designed for the Mac. It's made by Apple, so there's no surprise that it feels super intuitive and works very well with the iPhone. The app allows users to edit simple home movies by applying themes, like News and Neon, titles, audio, transitions and a range of effects. Video editing can seem a little daunting at first, but iMovie makes it as easy as possible, simply drag clips around the screen to change their order, trim them or cut them out completely.

The one that's best value for money: Camera Plus Pro

Camera Plus Pr

Camera Plus Pro is good value for money as it combines high quality photo and video editing. It has a very simple and intuitive UI, so like iMovie it makes video editing as simple as possible, as well as providing the user with a good choice of filters, such as black & white, sepia and our old favourite vintage, along with different shooting modes.

The app also allows for basic editing, such as altering the brightness and saturation, along with the ability to cut clips from the beginning and end of your video. An app like iMovie offers more editing freedom and iSupr8 is better when it comes to quality of filters, but if it's just simple editing with a few effects you're after, Camera Plus Pro is probably your best bet.
