How many people do you follow on Twitter, and how many strange things do they say each day? The network pulsates with streams of consciousness, and the daily observations of normal people who are funny, clever, silly or grumpy is what has inspired the Irkafirka blog.
The blog randomly picks out tweets that its two founders like, and one of them (I’m not sure if it’s Nick or Chris or both) produces a drawing based on it. I came across it when @petermoore blogged about the picture they drew of his Spain-fish-Octopus tweet.
Some of their older entries are funny, and a lot of them are weird. It’s all very original and quirky, and highlights why Twitter is not all ‘businesses trying to engage with consumers’ and social media gurus promising to help you make money online. It’s also about people, their lives, and their weird thoughts.
The blog doesn’t say much about its two founders, except that they “went to school together and had all sorts of crazy plans to change the world, mostly through the global mediums of pop music and comedy.” Which is funny because I too harbour dreams of international stardom!! Maybe we should set up some kind of supergroup?
They do however have a set of rules, which are:
1. Irkafirka is as fresh as possible. We aim to post illustrations within 24 hours of the tweet that inspired them.
2. We are not acquainted with our chosen tweeters. Tweets are chosen by a random process of dipping in and out of the massive data deluge that Twitter has become.
3. Suggestions are warmly welcomed but almost certainly ignored. Which isn’t to say that we don’t have a price. You want a commission, you’ve got to pony up. Call it becoming a patron of the arts.
4. We aim to post illustrations daily, but we have jobs, family and cinema tickets, all of which have to take priority from time to time.
5. If we stop enjoying it, we’ll stop.
6. We can break any of the rules except 5.
The site is now officially added to the random set of blogs I check most days (including this one, oh just look at the little ginger beauty and the amazing French house).
