The Sugababes are the New Faces of Windows 7 Revealed

By Cate Sevilla

The one thing PC and Mac users can both agree on is that the advertising campaign for Windows 7 is beyond irritating.

Whether it’s the TV adverts or the posters in an Underground station, that whole “I’m a nobody and yet Windows 7 was somehow my idea” thing is just annoying. A good idea – and I see where they were going with it – but it was executed wrong.

And now, in another “let’s get down with the kids” attempt, the Sugababes are now the new faces of Windows 7 Revealed.

Over at www.sugababeslovewindows7.com , the Sugababes have recorded several videos, showing you how easy to use Windows 7 is

Yes, it’s so easy, even a girl band can use it!

The videos are meant to give us “insight” on “just how simple Windows 7 is to use and how it helps simplify [the Sugababes’] hectic lives. “

Now, I wasn’t expecting these videos to go well. For numerous reasons...

Three of which being:

1)  As if the Sugababes casually sit around with a Sony Vaio in front of them

2)  As if the Sugababes use Bing.

3)  As if the Sugababes give a flying poo what Windows 7 can or can’t do.

But despite the videos being unnatural (“Gosh guys, I can’t decdide which sexy photo of us to use as my desktop wallpaper...what’s that you say? I can use two? In a slideshow? Gosh Windows 7 is swell!”) forced and unbelievable – they serve their purpose.

They show the Sugababes using Windows 7, and  I’ll admit that I learned a thing or two about what Windows 7 does.

Personally, I think instead of doing multiple crappy photos, the Sugababes should have been able to do one longer video like Amy Sedaris did for Microsoft Office – but, what do I know.

I’m just a blogger, and Windows 7 wasn’t my idea.

However,  I do get the feeling that The Saturdays are feeling a little down in the dumps today, because the only thing they've ever been asked to demonstrate is how easy it is to use a box of tampons

May I just say, wow! Because this is a very good marketing campaign. It's got this website and various commentators talking about it, adding to the buzz and extending reach and exposure. It's a great website, a good product, and all round a good project from MS.

Of course, this is not the only marketing campaign for Windows 7, it's just one of them, which is aimed at that particular target audience.

But look out for this campaign at future marketing/web awards. This one certainly gets my nomination.

P.S. I write this as an objective observer, though the official website http://www.sugababeslovewindows7.com was produced by a colleague. And I'm not surprised to see MS working with the Sugababes like this. MS has good links with the UK music industry, as we saw recently when Lilly Allen fronted the Xbox Lips promotion on the http://www.singwithlips.co.uk website.

This is indeed a very good marketing campaign, but it is a bit sexist too. They could have used some other characters for this one. I have seen somewhere an ad for a regcure software and they have also used girls, but they did it in a way that it didn't seemed sexist.

Beside the fact that Sugababes don't care about Windows 7, they also never smile. I would hate to use a product whose name is related to sad faces. I remember seeing a campaign for an alignment sheet and I laughed out loud. That alone made me buy the product.

They would better make a marketing campaign for private cloud services, because they're so discrete. I like Sugababes, although they aren't the original ones anymore. Still, good videos remain good.
