I am not an early adopter like Phil Dunphey. I will not wait in line for a gadget, and I certainly do not want to watch interviews with all of the freaks who will do so at 4am.
People who obsess over things like the iPad make me feel ill and don’t even get me started on the people who predict things about gadgets. Do we really want to see your photoshopped representation of what you THINK the next iPhone will look like? NO. And, really, who does?
When talk of the Kindle Fire started happening, I was as interested as I absolutely love my Kindle. However, everyone talking about it made me sort of hate the K-word for a while, so I refrained from joining in during the international wank-off that happened when the announcement from Amazon happened in New York last week.
Now that the dust (or should I say smoke?) (see what I did there?) has settled and everyone has their panties in a twist over the Kindle Touch 3G not allowing 3G web browsing - which, if you’re that bothered about should just bloody go get yourself a fecking iPad - I am allowing myself to rejoice and salivate over how incredibly awesome the Kindle Fire is.
What's so Cool About the Kindle Fire?
1) It’s in COLOUR!
While your Kindle has the black and white E Ink display, the Kindle Fire has a beautiful, touchscreen display that will allow you to read books and magazine subscriptions in colour - as well as watching films and TV shows. Huzzah.
2) Apps! Games!
There are games aplenty in the Amazon Appstore for Android - including Angry Birds and Plants vs Zombies. But if games aren’t your thing, there are plenty of useful apps such as Skype available, too.
3) Free Storage on the Cloud
The Kindle Fire gives you free storage for all your Amazon digital content in the Amazon Cloud (aka online), so you won’t be eating up your Fire’s memory with any music, films, books or apps you’ve purchased through them.
4) Lifestyle Friendly
If you don’t like fussing around with silicon "skins" or leather cases for your gadgets, the Fire’s extra durable display is your new best friend. Amazon say that it’s “chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic”, so you will no longer have to fear the keys handbag or your toddler’s sticky hands. Even better? It’s still small enough to fit in your handbag in the first place, and light enough to hold with one hand.
5) Quick Web Browsing
While you 3G snobs might be enraged that it’s WiFi only, the Kindle Fire’s web browser is the super quick Amazon Silk, so you can browse all of your favourite blogs and websites with ease. If you want to know all the techy reasons why Silk is so quick, you can read Amazon’s description of Silk.
Who is this for?
From what I can tell, the Kindle Fire is for media junkies with a busy lifestyle. If you love having books and magazines and thousands of different music choices with you at all times, and want them all in your handbag or - literally - in the palm of your hand, the Kindle Fire is the perfect choice. Plus, it's only $199. Ding dong.
