Men in Tech Industry With Sexist Attitudes Are Paid More

By Cate Sevilla

Great News, everyone!

If you're a man in the tech industry and you believe that women should be at home making babies and roast dinners, then you're more than likely completely unconcerned with the current "financial crisis".

A study out of the University of Florida conducted by scientists Timothy Judge and Beth Livingston has found that men with sexist attitudes get paid more. Their study lasted 26 years and found  that, on average,  "men who favored traditional gender roles make $8500 a year than those with more gender-balanced views". $8500 more a year? Good. God.

Apparently this situation is even worse in tech companies as Judge and Livingston found that women who *embrace* traditional gender roles are more likely to have greater *success*. The Harvard Business review has found that "52% of women drop completely out of the science, engineering and technology businesses in their 30s" not necessarily because of unequal pay, but because of "antigens".

These "antigens" are described by Boing Boing as: "Elements of the culture that actively repel women. Which is another way of saying that it's full of misogynistic dicks."

Judge and Livingston also say that:

"We found that 63% of women in science, engineering and technology have experienced sexual harassment. That's a really high figure. They talk about demeaning and condescending attitudes, lots of off-color jokes, sexual innuendo, arrogance; colleagues, particularly in the tech culture, who genuinely think women don't have what it takes -- who see them as genetically inferior,"

Chris Matysczcyk at Cnet wonders what the male CEOs of tech companies are doing about this completely fucked up situation. Our guess? Absolutely nothing. However, Matysczcyks raises a set of fantastic questions:

Should one conclude that if you're a woman you're more likely to survive (and, perhaps, even 'thrive') in a tech company if you can deal with being treated in a sexist manner? And do we also conclude that those women who tolerate sexist behavior do so because it actually corresponds with their world view in some way, even though they might be paid significantly less than male counterparts?

Or do we need some more research? Which tech CEO will sponsor it?

We would love it if a male CEO fo a tech company were to find their balls and actually want to sponsor the research needed to find out what exactly is going on in the tech industry that makes 52% of all women completely drop out of their industry when they hit their 30s. We would love it if a CEO were to go, "Hey, the fact that 63% of the women in ou industry have been sexually harassed - that needs to stop."

But, we're not exactly going to hold our breath and wait for any of you to step up to the plate.

Google would do it. After all, they NEED women in tech, having over 50% of women leave the industry when they reach 30 is shocking!
