Rachel McAdams & Why "Green Is Sexy"

By Cate Sevilla

Whenever movie stars or celebrities get involved with the Internet, I can’t help but roll my eyes. Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore’s foreplay on Twitter is enough to make me throw up and Kim Kardashian’s blog – albeit highly entertaining – is also high on the “Will It Make You Vom?” scale.

Because celebrity’s online are so nauseating, I was pretty skeptical when in I read in Rachel McAdams’s cover interview in this January’s US Vogue that she co-ran a green lifestyle website.

Usually when actresses bang on about being green and eco-friendly I want to stuff vegan brownies in my ears and beat them over the head with a pair of TOMS. However, what surprised me about McAdams's attitude towards living more green was that I actually believed her.

"I look at the world through a green lens now,” she told Vogue, “but you can't make yourself crazy. That feeling of green guilt can be really inhibiting. It's about a changing mind-set, remembering to turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth."

Sure McAdams still eats meat, but I discovered that beyond just preaching and walking instead of driving, she does something pretty cool stuff to help people share her “green lens” perspective on the world.

In 2007, McAdams launched a website called Green Is Sexy (www.greenissexy.org) with her friends Megan Kuhlmann and Didi Bethrum. Green Is Sexy is “about tiny changes, big impact” and the three green ladies share how you can make these tiny changes through “quips and tips” whether it’s suggestions for green-friendly recipes, product reviews or advice on green places to visit.

The website looks absolutely fantastic design wise, is easy to navigate and find what you’re looking for, and the tone of the content is entertaining without being too patronizing and preachy.

Basically, Rachel McAdams sharing her views on how to live a greener lifestyle is the exact opposite of how celebrity of yore Kirk Cameron “lightly encourages” you to find Jesus so you don’t spend eternity rotting in hell.

Plus, you can tell from the way McAdams talks about the site that she really, truly loves it and believes in what she writes on the site. (She even includes “doing a little work on the website” as part of what she’d do on her perfect day.)

I give Green Is Sexy two giant thumbs up, and McAdams mad props for being a celeb who actually practices what she preaches, without being to, ya know, preachy.

Like what you’re hearing? Head on over to www.greenissexy.org and open your eyes to the fabulous world of living green, brought to you by Rachel McAdams and friends.
