Part 2 of The Growing Need for Social Education on the Internet For Teens

Part two of Kate Kotler's column on why teens should receive social education about how to respectfully and appropriately behave online... I know that when I was a teenager that’s how I felt.  The difference between my generation - which is not so largely removed from the generation of teens I serve as Community Manager of Meez.com - is that when I was feeling bi...

The Growing Need for Social Education About The Internet For Teens

Part one of Kate Kotler's column on why teens are in dire need of social education on what is respectful and appropriate behavior on the Internet... Let’s face it: everyone loves a good flamewar.  It’s endemic of the Internet culture - even the most sane, rational and level headed person loves to jump into the fray every once in a while and muck around down in the mud with the innerweb trolls.  Level of snark, sharpness and ability to type pithy comebacks are highl...

How Technology is Making it Harder to Put a Face to a Name

There I was. Standing in line outside some technology industry shin-dig. And it happened. The guy was looking right at me. I knew I knew him. And by the look on his face I knew that he knew me. But for the life of me I just couldn’t remember his name. Until recently I’d have to say that this scenario was a truly rare one in my life. “Until recently” being the operative words in that sentence. It would seem that lately it’s all too familiar. I’m not sure whether to chalk it up ...

UK Gov Wants Every Child Online By 2011

For once, the government has done something that I'm actually really excited about! According to The Metro, a new bill was passed yesterday that will give disadvantaged free home computers and internet broadband access. There will be 20,000 children initially chosen to participate in the program's trial period, and the grant will pay for the internet access for a year, a computer, software, and IT support for three years.

Have The Balls To Break-Up In Person, Not On Facebook

Recently, I broke up with someone over e-mail. They didn't respond to the message and I was left wondering what to think. I told a friend about this, and she responded: "Check Facebook. Has he deleted you yet?". He hadn't, but a week later, after we had exchanged a few more messages, I decided to focus on work and not open the most recent message he had sent, with its ominous subject line. But, I checked Facebook and lo and behold, I was one less friend. I knew we were done.

Kick-ass Websites Re-Visited: Someone Once Told Me

I meet some fantastic people working in the social and digital ‘space’. But every so often, a project crosses my path that’s so cool - I just have to talk about it. I’ve been a follower of Postsecret for some years now (got the book, read the t-shirt and all that) – and the desire for similar arts-based community projects never seems to wane. There’s ‘Before I Die I Wa...

Our Favorite Websites for Women in Business

I think that many women would agree that there are a significant amount of books, guides and websites that are aimed at women in business that are actually pretty crap. They're either patronizing or bland, or too corporate and therefore ignore a major group of women who are either running smaller businesses or are simply self employed as a freelancer.

Gadget Lust: Netbooks and "Laptots"

Aimed mostly at students, there are a growing number of options in the realm of mini-laptops, which I prefer to think of as laptots, because that's an adorable word. For example, if you do a search on Amazon for "mini-laptop", you come up with nearly t...
