The RIAA stuck a knife into the hearts of music nerds everywhere when they temporarily shut down Muxtape, the NYC based music sharing site where users could host their own streaming playlists But, just like it has played out every single time the RIAA tries to take the free music loving masses down, we have risen again with these alternatives:
1. Opentape
If you have your own domain and web space, you can host your own muxtape-like streaming playlists on your site. The instructions are very easy to follow, and if you have your own site, it's all stuff you should know how to do anyway (it just involves making a directory and using FTP). Here is mine: Songs for Hipsters To Make Love to.
2. Tumbltape
If you used Muxtape, chances are you also keep a blog on the intensely addictive Tumblr. Tumbltape takes the songs you've posted on to your Tumblr blog and creates a playlist of them.
3. Favtape
Another cool mashup is Favtape, which uses the information from your Pandora or last.fm account and creates a streaming playlist from your songs you've bookmarked on Pandora or marked as "favorite" on last.fm.
As a big Pandora user, I love this, but, you should beware that sometimes they won't find the right song; the song it'll play will be something with the same name but not the one you wanted. Small price to pay for having an easy playlist with songs you already like!
