I think that many women would agree that there are a significant amount of books, guides and websites that are aimed at women in business that are actually pretty crap. They're either patronizing or bland, or too corporate and therefore ignore a major group of women who are either running smaller businesses or are simply self employed as a freelancer.
I'm incredibly pleased that I have found a few new websites for women in business that are none of the above. They're smart, they're informative, and above all else, they *get* it.
IndieBizChicks
Described as being "for women who'd rather work for themselves, than work for the man", IndieBizChicks is a really cool website. Creator and founder Crissy Herron says that she created the site to "provide information to women that will help them start and grow their own businesses" as she believes that "women can earn more money (and be a lot happier) when they are working for their selves". Sigh, a woman after my own heart.
WomenCo
A fantastic new social networking site for women in business, WomenCo says that it offers female professionals in the US the opportunity to "forge connections with other working women to keep informed, empower and entertain themselves, and advance their careers".
From job posting, to enlightening columns, to career tips and videos - WomenCo is an incredibly helpful and well rounded community that offers help and advice to women in business - whether you're self employed or climbing the corporate latter rung by rung.
TheNextWoman
A new business magazine for "female internet heroes", TheNextWomen features all the innovative, web savvy women who are shaping the face of internet companies. Discussing "business topics from a female angle" as well as profiling female heroes in business, and make them "notable and quotable", I am so pleased to see a London based, female run website that focuses on all the women who are kicking ass online. Their target audience is "female (future) founders, CxO’s and VC’s of internet companies", but even if you're not the CEO of a major internet company, you can totally still appreciate TheNextWoman's content and mission.
