Mobile Romance: Apps for Your Valentine

By Becca Caddy

If like me you don’t normally associate mobile applications with Valentine’s Day, then you’ll be shocked by today’s list. Whether you need gift advice, want to carve your partner’s name on the side of a virtual tree or show your disgust by watching a teddy explode…

Sickly Sweet

There are some truly cringe-worthy love note and greeting card apps available and Postage – Romance is really no exception.

But, if cards and presents just don’t quite get across how much you care about someone on the 14th of February, then this app is the best of a silly bunch, allowing you to create little cards from your favourite photos and decorate them with cherubs, roses and other romantic things.

Maybe virtual greetings cards are far too conventional for you and you want to say “I love you” in a more American high school circa 1992 kind of way with Tree Mail, which allows you to carve your initials into the side of a virtual tree. Something about this is sweet, but surely the whole appeal of carving your name into anything is that it stays there forever? Not until you turn off your phone…

Ever been in a romantic embrace and felt like something was lacking? Maybe you need Set the Mood: A Toolkit for Lovebirds which acts as a virtual fireplace, plays romantic music and allows you to add a picture of you and your loved one into a little virtual photo frame beside the flames for you both to gaze at. Who said romance was dead?

Cute Games

According to Electric Pig the hugely popular and highly addictive game Angry Birds will be getting a cute, pink makeover just in time for Valentine’s Day, so watch out for the update…

The creators behind the cute little character Pucca are launching a new mobile app called Pucca Noodle Rush this February. The aim is to race Pucca around a busy restaurant making sure she keeps all of the customers happy. This sounds worryingly addictive, so download with caution.

Finger Mingle: Valentine’s Addition is a simple game in which two players push little hearts around the screen. The whole aim is to get two people touching each other, well their fingers anyway. Hot.

Gift Ideas

If you’re hoping to receive a rather cliché bottle of perfume this year and have little faith that your partner will chose the right brand, then I recommend downloading the iPerfumer app. You can build up your own fragrance profile, share recommendations with others and transfer all of this information to your Facebook wall, acting as a not-so-subtle hint to anyone that may see it.

Free for both Apple OS and Android devices. BitchBuzz app rating: 3/5 for being useful but about as subtle as a brick to the back of the head.

To be honest it makes me a little sad that the next app exists. Creative Romantic Ideas does what you’d expect, you fill in your details along with how much time and money you’re willing to put into Valentine’s ideas and it churns out a list of things you could do, including the usual as well as quirkier options, like personalised M&Ms?!

Valentine’s Haters

If you’re really bitter and angry about Valentine’s Day and there’s nothing you’d like to do more than watch cutesy, romantic gifts being blown to bits, then iXplode, the Valentine’s version, is the app for you.

The description of iXploder in the app store is priceless:

“Want to send your "ex" a special holiday greeting? How about a heart shaped box of Chocolates being ripped apart in a massive explosion along with a custom message straight from the heart?”
