Lenovo: For Those Who Do

By Cate Sevilla

Lenovo is a brand that you not have ever haven’t heard of before, unless, that is, you’ve happened to notice one of their new “For Those Who Do” adverts at the cinema.

However, Lenovo are one of the biggest PC and laptop companies in the world. On a commerical and corporate level their powerful (yet slightly clunky) ThinkPads and laptops are used by thousands (if not millions) of people across the world, and now they’re coming after you, dear consumer.

After spending a few days with the Lenovo team in New York City and getting my paws on the new products they have coming out - I think the consumer world with welcome Lenovo with open arms, and open laptop bags.

A brilliant combination of design, innovation and technology, Lenovo are trying to become a household name with geeks and fashionistas alike with their new U300 Ultrabook. (Yes, not a netbook or laptop, an Ultrabook.)

Their new IdeaPad Ultrabooks are incredibly slim, incredibly powerful, and incredibly well designed. And as gorgeous design and technology go so well together, Lenovo thought they’d introduce themselves and their new U300 Ultrabook to the fashionable folk at the Vogue Fashion’s Night Out at Saks Fifth Avenue during New York Fashion Week. (Smart, eh?) Lenovo also collaborated with designers Mary Ma and Gao Yu to create one-off, bespoke laptop cases for the new Ultrabooks, just to add that extra touch of glamour.

From a fashionable perspective, the new Ultrabooks are gorgeous. Available in both Graphite Grey or Clementine Orange, the finish on these laptops is cool to the touch, plus, as the colours were applied through an electrolytic process and sandblasted, the coating on each laptop is scratch resistant. (So, really, if you didn’t want to keep your U300 in a Mary Ma designed case, you wouldn’t have to. You can just put it in your handbag and go!)

Based on the seamless design of books, the U Series of Ultrabooks is sleek from top to bottom. The .6” thick computer is made from single-piece aluminum and has a one-of-a-kind Breathable Keyboard, an Intel Advanced Cooling Technology, that allows air to flow through the keyboard and out of the sides and rear hinge, which means there are no ugly grills and vents on the bottom of your laptop. This also supposedly means that you don’t have to work with a pillow or a Belkin Cushtop under the U300, either, which I find incredbly exciting.

Lenovo as a company are psyched about their new U Series, and I can’t say I blame them. The “book” design is smart, as it gives the laptop a seamless shape that looks much more Mac than it does PC. Plus, the scratch resistant coating and the fact that it weighs just over 2lbs means I can literally throw it in my handbag, if I wanted to. The battery life provides up to 8 hours of proper use - we’re not just talking about turning down the brightness of the screen to save power - plus, the charger for the Ultrabook is surprisingly lightweight, and its Lenovo RapidCharge battery can be charged up to 50% capacity in just 30 minutes.

This all sounds amazing, right?

I’ll have a U300 Ultrabook of my own come early November, so I can give you a full review on whether or not the U3000 actually does what it promises.

It should be said, however, that from what I’ve seen, Lenovo have some seriously exciting products and plans up their sleeves, and the likes of HP and Dell better watch out...
