Is Twitter Just Full of Freaks?

By Becca Caddy

Twitter has changed a lot of things, the way we network professionally, the way we interact with celebrities, the way businesses deal with issues with their customer base, the list really could go on and on.

But what we all didn’t expect was the amount of funny, comical, satirical and down right weird Twitter streams that would start to appear – and become extremely popular.

It seems that many from normal individuals to brands and agencies are using Twitter in these weird and wonderful ways. Whether it's to create a fake persona, like the fake Cheryl Cole, @CherylKerl or @Aleksandr_Orlov from Compare the Meerkat. Or to entertain, like @Shitmydadsays. Or inform like the people behind @BibleSummary. Or to seriously over-share like the woman who tweeted when in labour @Childcareisfun_ there really are a wide and varied selection of these tweaks – that’s Twitter freaks, sorry!

But, should we be praising these innovative, strange and humorous ways of using Twitter or are we all getting a little bit sick of seeing incomprehensible Geordie tweets and bible passages in our streams?

If the Twitter account dedicated to tweeting random outbursts from a 74 year old man, @Shitmydadsays is anything to go by then some of these Twitter accounts are actually proving to be very popular and very successful – it’s recently been made into a TV show in the US.

There have always been satirical and fake profiles on social networks, but they really seem to have taken to Twitter in a big way. Maybe it’s because it’s so accessible or there’s something more amusing about updating 140 characters at a time. Whatever the motivations may be, whether we’re annoyed or amused by these tweets, it doesn’t look like they’re going to be shutting up anytime soon. Here’s a list of just a few weird, wonderful and strange Twitter accounts:

@Shitmydadsays: I’m 29. I live with my 74-year-old dad. He is awesome. I just write down shit that he says.

@Biblesummary: I’m summarising the bible – one tweet per chapter, one chapter a day.

@CherylKerl : Hei, itz mint man! Ah'm a autha noo me! Mei book, Woath it? Coase Ah Am, Pet is ganna be oot published bei Coronet on 14th October. Lovalee!

@Connectedtree: No bio for this one, but it’s basically a tree that tweets. Yes, that’s right.
