Facebook's Stalker Check is a Novelty App, Not a Detective

By Vanessa Torres

Ever wanted to see who’s looking at your facebook profile page? Now you can. Or so the makers of the new Stalker Check app claim.

I installed it tonight and went through a number of reactions in the span of a few minutes. Initially there were no surprises. The people I interact with the most—and therefore who would show as posting to my wall frequently through comments, gifts, etc.—were ranked at the top of the list.

Then suddenly my hidden stalker wanted more. Just how many times had my top ‘stalkers’ been on my profile? Alas, I was quickly disappointed. Stalker Check only shows the ranking of your profile posters, but not the actual number of times they’ve come to stare dreamily at your profile pics or the number of times they’ve almost posted a death threat, but changed their mind at the last second. In fact, Stalker Check appears to do none of those things and states the following about ‘how we do it’.

"About Stalker Check

For privacy reasons, this app only lists users who have interacted with your profile at least once during your friendship (e.g. by writing on your wall, or liking something). Real stalkers (the creepy kind) are protected by Facebook Privacy, and will never be revealed, by this or any other app."

In other words, Stalker Check doesn’t appear to track page views, but rather keeps track of the clicks on your profile page only. So you can look all you want, but as long as you refrain from ‘touching’ a friends page, you’ll stay under the Stalker Check radar.

Feeling a bit duped, I was about to close and uninstall the app, when I noticed another button at the top left of my screen; it said simply ‘My Friends’. I clicked it and was given the option to choose a friend and then view their most active profile posters. It was kinda cool, but made me feel dirty at the same time.

And so I uninstalled Stalker Check.

My friends are safe from my prying eyes even if I’m not safe from theirs (I’ll still show up in their stalker list), though I prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt that they won’t go snooping around on my profile. The verdict, for now, is that Stalker Check appears to be mostly a novelty at the moment.

However, it’s drawing much skepticism and even outrage from users who know Facebook’s policy of ‘Recent activity will never be shown about whose profile you view’ and expect them to adhere to that.

There is a cruel irony with having a so called 'Stalker Check' application on a PUBLIC website where people have CHOSEN to upload pictures and details about themselves. Once data is on the internet that is it, it is out in the wild. All hopes and dreams of privacy evaporated on aggreement to the Terms And Conditions of Facebook upon sign up.

Good post though :-)

actuasly it is who has nosed at your profile the most, but if you've never left them a comment you won't come up, 'this app only lists users who have interacted with your profile at least once during your friendship (e.g. by writing on your wall, or liking something)' so even if you've only left them one post ever, if you nose at their profiel everysingle day you will come up, i'm guessing they found a loop hole int he privacy agreement.

hmmm....elena, good point, though i'm not certain that's exactly how it works, we'll try to re-verify whether profile views factor in or not.

Interesting article. Haven't checked out the app yet; but, it would be curious to me to see who's viewing my profile and when. Too bad it's a novelty app and not a serious one -- it could be very valuable to the FB property.

feh, this is stupid, because there are some people who have nothing to do but spam gifts and super wall posts; those count towards the stalker-rating too, so the app is useless, useless, useless.

The application clearly states "In accordance with the Facebook Privacy Policy, we do NOT count page views or private messages."

No app can show you this information. Facebook just needs to send out a big announcement that says so, that way at least SOME people will quit falling for these things.

I think I found a flaw in the app and how it secretly works.
It takes your most RECENT wall posts/notifications from whoever and then puts them in from most to least. When I say recent, I mean recent.
Today was my birthday and I received NUMEROUS comments saying Happy birthday, many from people who have never commented on my wall before today and who I know for a fact could care less about looking at my page (plus according to the privacy policy they cant even go by how many times they 'look')
My stalker list seemed pretty accurate at first because it showed my best friends first but slowly it started getting weirder and more randomer and it ended up being some of the RANDOMS that left me a bday comment. I hope that make senses...
So as you see, the fact that I checked after my birthday had screwed with the application's clever trick.

so if i visit someone's profile and view their wall regularly, when they check, what will they see. how many times i've visited or what i've done in terms of both prof. and wall. I really would appreciate an answer.

I removed my ex-boyfriend from my friend's list. After that, i admit that i would check his profile (which of course would be limited because he was no longer my friend) and view his photos. Would he have any way of knowing that I viewed his profile?

It doesn't work and never did. It is quite possibly a virus too, so knock yourselves out. Do a google search for these apps. and see what you find.

Hi, I really want to stab my ex wife with a size 15 Bamboo circular knitting needle but need to monitor her movements to successfully plan the attack. Will this app foil my aspirations ? I already use the "death threat" app and poke her regularly.

This all started over a farmville argument . Please help.

You can find more of this kind of apps and tricks for viewing private profiles and know who visits yours in http://privacystalker.blogspot.com. And YES most of the times we are full responsible for letting other access our private information.
