To help celebrate the launch of their latest Motoblur handset, the Flipout, Motorola held a competition for young, attractive members of the public to be the faces of their new campaign. The "Hip to be Square" competition saw a lot of entrants, ranging from the quirky, the strange, and the beautiful. Voted on by the scrutinizing public, Motorola made it clear that they were looking for five lads and ladies who embodied what the Flipout is all about – being young, colourful, tech-savvy, and, well, hip. And did they ever find a group of hip, hot, colourful young adults.
The Phone
The Flipout is not an iPhone Killer, and nor does it want to be. Powered by the cleverness that is Motoblur, this nifty Android phone is perfect for young folks who want a full keyboard, easy access to their social networks , email, and contacts, but in a sleek, colourful package that can fit into your pocket. The Flipout does exactly what it says on the tin.
The Flipout is run by technology that you are familiar with and respect (and that, above all else, you know will work) and it’s very no muss, no fuss. Perfect for teenagers or young adults who care about staying connected, but aren’t necessarily looking for anything bulky or heavy duty– the Flipout is easy to carry about with you, but also customizable as it has interchangeable, colourful back pieces which allow you to change the look and color of your mobile in mere seconds.
The Shoot
Motorola’s five Hip to be Square winners – Tobi Zak, Frankie Murray, Sabina Emrit, Nic Yeeles and Amy Gilliam – all gathered together at Holborn Studios for the official photo shoot for the Hip to be Square campaign, and naturally, we were there to spy on everyone to film all of the backstage makeup, hair, gore, drama and panic that can erupt any second during a photo shoot of this scale. (In the end, there was more dancing and Lady Gaga than gore or drama, but it was all still very exciting.)
The man behind the camera for the shoot was renowned fashion photographer Adam Lawrence who was has photographed everyone from Alexa Chung to Chris Moyles, and the five lovely winners were styled by the brilliant and fabulous Matthew Zorpas and Alize Morand , who you may have heard of or seen around the Internet, as they’re both, how do you say, a Big Deal.
Styled from head to toe in designs from Ioannis Dimitrousis and Maysson, accessories from Rheanna Lingham, Luna & Curious, and Eva Kim Heu and (absolutely stunning) shoes from Georgia B, I was completely blown away by how, well, model-like the winners looked.
It was an undeniably fantastic, fun, and incredibly glamorous afternoon for the five winners, and with the keen eye of Lawrence and the stylish brains of Zorpas and Morand, Amy, Tobi, Nic, Frankie and Sabina all definitely proved, with a little help from the Flipout, that it is most definitely hip to be square.
